In Arthur Miller's classic drama, a wave of hysteria sweeps the town of Salem, Massachusetts as a group of young women begin to make accusations of witchcraft. Before long, even the most upstanding citizens fall under suspicion and the trials... and hangings begin. Miller's classic portrait of one man's struggle toward grace is set in the scorching context of the 17th-Century Salem witch trails. A community galvanized by fear and suspicion, a wife betrayed by lust, an orphan girl blind with passion and possessed with revenge, ruthless prosecutors, deluded holy men and covetous neighbors - The Crucible pulses with the destructiveness of socially sanctioned violence, the power of hysteria and rancor and the blindness of zealots.

The play is set in Elizabethan England where passions of the flesh, the spirit, and the state culminate in an unforgettable showdown between two cousin-queens. Queen Elizabeth I, the Virgin Queen, is threatened by the survival of her Catholic cousin, Mary, Queen of Scots, who has been her prisoner for 19 years. Vardamis' knowledge and understanding of world affairs allows her to skillfully blend ancient history and modern events to cast an exciting and occasionally amusing light on human nature and our attempts to live together in a reasonably civilized way. As the story unfolds and is presented from the perspective of very unusual and well drawn people, we are absorbed into it through realistic dialogue, well-flowing narrative, and delicate description of relationships and the beauty of Vermont's seasons and scenery.
